Cultural Academy : multicultural lifewide education
History - Cultural Academy was created in 2007 by students and staff at the University of Surrey. Its purpose was to make a difference to the experience of students by combining learning gained through being part of a multicultural society with doing useful things that added value to the multicultural campus society and extending the concept of social enterprise to cultural enterprise. Academies were organised and facilitated by the Surrey Centre for Excellence in Professional Training and Education (SCEPTrE) as a tangible co-curricular expression of lifewide learning and education. Academies were run in 2007-08, 08-09, 09-10 (2 Academies), and in 2010-11, together with multicultural welcome events for international students who were just entering the university. In March 2011 SCEPTrE's project came to an end but we hope that the information on this website will inspire and help others to develop their own Cultural Academies. I would like to thank all the students and colleagues who contributed to the development and facilitation of the Academies which were some of the richest and most enjoyable learning enterprises I have ever been involved in. Do we really realize the fact that in a single photo we managed to capture more than 10 cultures??? Cultures that have their roots in different corners of the Earth! That's a miracle!
